I Believe in Expensive SpeechOf late there has been much deserved outcry about the curtailment of free speech (including legislation to this effect)- especially in the face of increasing control measures and censorship by institutions such as WHO and WEF, politicians, big tech, and arrogant business leaders backed by the self-appointed (non-) elite. Participative democracies should encourage free speech - but remember that speaking out can carry a price. You donnot have access to view the rest of this newsletter. WHAT'S IN THIS NEWSLETTER NEWS The 5th INTEGRAL PRACTICE CONVERGENCE At this conference at the Center for Transformative Learning’s Integral Practitioner Convergence, taking place May 6, 7, & 8, 2022, I will be speaking on a panel using the theme Weaving Peace. As we pass the one-year mark since the beginning of the pandemic and a light at the end of the tunnel begins to appear, key questions about our collective future start to emerge. Beyond the medical and economic concerns, questions about the future of coaching, organizational leadership, psychotherapy, and education are in need of collective inquiry and reflection. I encourage you to learn more if you are seeking to coach, consult, and lead in the post-pandemic integral future. The Integral Practitioner Convergence will feature a diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and professions across two days of panels. The free Storify Your Culture conference – transform story into a great tool for working with corporate culture – takes place 18th to 20th May. My slot on using story to shift culture within conversation-circles is on the 20th. https://historia.academy/storify2022-en BOOKS33 Work is proceeding on the Books33 publication of ‘Story-Bridging: foster possibilities and ignite connections’. It will be an eco-friendly e-Book/ Kindle edition. We have reached the layout and cover design stage Each of the three authors have produced short video bytes to help present the book. The intention of the authors and Books33 is to help distribute the book widely (commercial considerations are not a priority) to all who seek to build bridges in our divided families, communities, organisations and nations. Our hope is that the book reaches every eye, mind, heart, and spirit that will be blessed by it. GECKOS AND FROGS Our new home in Rawsonville in the country has an abundance of geckos. Like little lizards, their fingers are literally sticky so they can move vertically and upside down. Well camouflaged, geckos also have regenerative, adaptive and transformative powers. They are considered to be sacred messengers or angels and guardians in some cultures and symbolise good luck and good hope in others. There are so many we must be due for lots of good luck! We also have a frog family that sings quite loudly all night (nearly drowning out the crickets!). I recall reading an Anthony de Mello story a long time ago about Brother Bruno who was, night after night, distracted by a croaking bullfrog while trying to study. He eventually came to see (and love) this as a constant prayer or song that enriched the sounds of the night and allowed him to feel at one with the harmony and diversity of nature. That bullfrog taught him more about prayer than books could. Starting a garden from scratch has forced us into being close to the grounding (no pun) earth and nature. A blessing. QUOTEABLE QUOTES “The brutality of war is literally unutterable. There are no words foul and filthy enough to describe it” - Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy (Woodbine Willy) “Silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly” - Mahatma Gandhi “We need more people speaking out. This country is not overrun with rebels and free thinkers. It's overrun with sheep and conformists” - Bill Maher, contemporary comedian and political commentator “There is only one duty, only one safe course, and that is to try to be right and not to fear to do or say what you believe to be right” - Winston Churchill “Freedom is not a passive state, it’s an active state; freedom is not a privilege, it’s an obligation; freedom is not an end but a means to an end. Freedom is not just something we demand only of the government, but also something we must actively create within and around ourselves. Freedom is not an ornament, but a set of tools to go about building a fairer, safer and sustainable society” - Mark Heywood (Daily Maverick Editorial 26th April, 2022: South Africa, use freedom now or lose freedom tomorrow) FORWARD THIS TO A FRIEND Help us to spread the story-in-business message and forward the email to a friend or colleague who you feel would be interested.
