HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 21st MARCH 2022
In his party-political and distinctly unstatesmanlike speech Cyril Ramaphosa said, “Racism did not die when apartheid fell”. HE GOT THAT RIGHT!
Fact: It has considerably worsened in the 30 years since his government has been in power, fuelled by heaps of racist legislation and hate speech and is currently at its lowest point. Two further, important facts seldom mentioned: (1) In the 1992 national referendum in South Africa 70% of ‘Whites’ voted to abolish apartheid. (85% of registered voters voted) (2) Whites are hardly a threat. Their aging and declining population represents less than 7% of the population.
Whatever the final verdict, the current hate speech court battle between Julius Malema and AfriForum has again highlighted his penchants for aggressive expression of hatred towards the white population, coming dangerously close to encouraging genocide (never opposed by Ramaphosa or the ANC). The marvellous opportunity for a diverse – equal – inclusive – belonging rainbow nation has been deliberately suppressed.
