Newsletter 114: A New Profile for Board Directors

The inability of many Boards to contribute to solving the severe environmental, economic and societal problems facing us, allied to self-serving mind-sets, is deeply disturbing. We need Board directors who have larger minds (metanoia) and practice a deep letting go of self in the interests of others (kenosis).

NEWS
Gift yourself this Christmas. Halo and Noose Subscribers enjoy free access to the booklet Ancient Wisdom for Modern Workplaces, about which the father of business culture, Edgar Schein, has said:

“It is a great collection that has put in one document so many separate thoughts and insights that are scattered in our literature. I love all the stories and quotations that you provide. My own efforts along these lines with many stories are in my recent book Humble Consulting (2016) and will be elaborated in the book I am doing with my son which will be called Humble Leadership. I would love to meet you sometime and discuss the dilemma of how to get more of these ideas implemented in the business world that still operates by a strong culture of competitive individualism and bureaucracy that creates unnecessary distance between people”.

In 2018 I have been asked to administer the HR Module of the University of Cape Town's MSc in Project Management

The BounceBackAbility workshop retreat that I ran at the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo from 1st to 3rd December was fully subscribed, and participants found themselves able to support and learn from each other to a wonderful extent

From January 2018 I will be acting as member liaison for the IMCSA in Cape Town. (Institute of Management Consultants and Master Coaches of South Africa) while considering whether to take up the Council Representative portfolio for Cape Town.

QUOTEABLE QUOTES
PERSONAL GROWTH
Only as high as I reach can I grow, only as far as I seek can I go, only as deep as I look can I see, only as much as I dream can I be – Karen Ravn, Authoress

By definition, soul evades the cage of definition. It is the indefinable essence of a person’s spirit and being. It can never be touched and yet the merest hint of its absence causes immediate distress - David Whyte

We can speak about human values, but we cannot know it directly. We infer value through its expression in behaviour – Dorothy Lee

KENOSIS
Moving beyond the small self is a huge source of both meaning and contentment - Robert Waldinger, Prof of Psychiatry, Harvard University

Don’t give up on love. When love is hard or painful, open your heart even further – Patrul Rinpoche (19th-century Buddhist master)

METANOIA
If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective - Martin Luther King, Jr.

LEADERSHIP
I know it is possible for leaders to use their power and influence, their insight and compassion, to lead people back to an understanding of who we are as human beings, to create the conditions for our basic human qualities of generosity, contribution, community, and love to be evoked no matter what - Margaret Wheatley

PERSPECTIVE
Maximising shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world - Jack Welch (after his big corporate retirement)
